EVANSVILLE, Ind. (November 11, 2017) –
Â
In Short
Quinn Spieker posted 13 kills and
Gabi Maciagowski notched another double-double as Loyola University Chicago (4-23, 3-13 MVC) swept host Evansville (10-18, 4-12 MVC), 25-19, 25-17, 29-27, tonight at Meeks Family Fieldhouse. The win gives the Ramblers their first three-sweep of an opponent since November 19, 2016, when they rolled past Bradley, 3-0.
Â
How It Happened
Loyola's serve game was strong in the opening set as it served five aces in a 25-19 victory, marking just the seventh time this season it has won the first set of a match. With the score deadlocked at 18,
Morgan Gresham pounded down a kill and followed with an ace to open up a 4-0 run that gave the Ramblers a 22-18 advantage they would never relinquish.
Â
Eight Evansville errors in set two were part of a game-changing, 13-1 run that allowed Loyola to wipe away a 13-11 deficit and take hold of a commanding 24-14 lead en route to a 25-17 victory. Spieker began to assert herself, tallying five of Loyola's 10 kills in the set.
Â
Set three was tightly contested the entire way, with neither team holding a lead of more than two points. Loyola found itself in a 21-19 hole late before stringing together a 5-1 run, capped off by an
Elle Van Grinsven service ace, to stake claim to a 24-22 advantage. The Purple Aces wouldn't go down without a fight however, and evened the score at 24 on a Rachel Tam kill and a block by Rocio Fortuny and Joselyn Coronel.
Â
After the teams traded points for a brief period of time, Loyola was able to complete the comeback thanks to consecutive kills from Spieker for a 29-27 victory.
