BERKELEY, Calif. (August 26, 2017) –
In Short
Cold-hitting Loyola University Chicago hit just .113 (32-21-97) en route to a 23-25, 17-25, 16-25 loss to UC Irvine (3-0) tonight in its final match at the Cal Molten Classic. The Ramblers, who received a team-high 10 kills from
Gabi Maciagowski, move to 0-3 with the loss.
How It Happened
Loyola put up a valiant effort and nearly pulled off a stunning comeback, but ultimately came up short in a 25-23 decision in the opening set. UC Irvine sprinted out to a 9-3 lead before the Ramblers responded with a 9-3 run of their own to even the score at 12. Loyola trailed 18-17 before the Anteaters used a 5-0 spurt to extend their advantage to 23-18. The Ramblers showed their resolve and fought back to notch four consecutive points, two of which came courtesy of
Elle Van Grinsven kills, to get within a point, at 24-23, before the Anteaters sealed the outcome thanks to a Loyola service error.
A 5-0 Loyola run in the second set helped the Ramblers turn a two-point deficit into a 14-11 lead as Maciagowski accounted for a pair of points in that surge with a kill and a block. However, UCI responded by closing out the set on a 14-3 spurt to capture a 25-17 victory.
UC Irvine scored five of the first six points in the third set to sprint out to an early advantage and saw that lead increase to 10-6 early on. After Loyola got within three points (13-10) though, the Anteaters pulled away with the help of a 7-1 run that gave them a comfortable 20-11 lead. The Ramblers would rally and get as close as 21-16 on a
Maddy Moser service ace, but UCI reeled off four unanswered points to close out a 25-16 victory and the match.
