In Short
Host Marquette (4-3) hit a blistering .370 (36-9-73) to earn a 25-15, 25-11, 25-17 victory over Loyola University Chicago tonight at the Al McGuire Center in the opening match of the Marquette Invitational. With the loss, the Ramblers slip to 1-6 on the season.
How It Happened
Marquette raced out to an early 11-2 lead and never looked back en route to a 25-15 victory in set one.
Morgan Gresham provided the offense for the Ramblers in the opener, totaling four kills and no errors on five swings.
Much like set one, the Golden Eagles jumped on Loyola early, getting out to a 4-1 advantage before the Ramblers fought back to even the score at 5. However, from there, Marquette went on an 18-4 run to open up a 23-9 edge and it coasted to a 25-11 victory.
In set three, consecutive kills from
Elle Van Grinsven and a Marquette hitting error turned a two-point deficit into an 11-10 Loyola lead giving the Ramblers hope to extend the match to a fourth set. But, the Golden Eagles would record five of the next six points to reclaim the lead before pulling away late in the set for a 25-17 win.
A Look At The Numbers
- Gresham continued her solid play of late, leading Loyola with 10 kills.
- Quinn Spieker pitched in seven kills for the Ramblers, who hit just .108 for the match.
- Allie Barber notched a match-high 13 kills to lead Marquette.
