Collin Mahan drilled a match-high 11 kills and No. 8 Loyola University Chicago (3-2) hit .380 (38-11-71) as a team to earn a 25-16, 25-21, 25-18 victory over Grand View (1-1) tonight at Gentile Arena.
How It Happened
The first set was a tightly contested affair until a kill from
Will Tischler broke a 16-all tie.
Kyle Piekarski then served out the string, notching three aces as part of Loyola's set-closing 9-0 run that gave it a 25-16 victory. The Ramblers hit .500 (12-2-20) in the opener.
Grand View appeared to be in control late in set two as it held a 19-17 advantage, but the Ramblers rattled off six unanswered points, three via blocks, to seize a 23-19 lead en route to a 25-21 victory that gave them a 2-0 lead in the match.
Loyola darted out to a 10-4 edge in set three and never looked back as it pulled off its first three-set sweep of the season. The Ramblers hit a blistering .650 (14-1-20) in the final set, and tallied the last two points of the match on a Mahan kill and a Vikings hitting error, to move to 3-2 on the season.
A Look At The Numbers
- Mahan hit .588 (11-1-17) and has now recorded 10 or more kills in each of Loyola's five matches this season.
- Ryan Jamison and Jeff Jendryk pitched in eight kills apiece, with Jendryk hitting a sizzling .727 (8-0-11) with a pair of blocks.
- Felix Chapman led Grand View with 10 kills.
