Stout Defensive Effort Helps Loyola Pick Up 2-0 Road Win Over Valparaiso

Szczesny, Laudeman net goals as Ramblers earn first victory at Valparaiso since 2015

Box Score

In Short…

The Loyola University Chicago women's soccer team recorded its third shutout in its last four games, defeating Valparaiso by a final score of 2-0 this evening at Brown Field in Valparaiso, Ind.  Tonight's result sees the Ramblers remain at the top of the Missouri Valley Conference table at 4-1-0 (7-6-1 overall), while the Crusaders drop to 1-3-1 in league play (4-7-3 overall).

Coach Bimbi's Thoughts…
"I'm really proud of the girls.  I thought they showed a lot of character tonight after a really disappointing overtime loss last Saturday.  They came in very focused.  We didn't let Valparaiso have many chances, while we were able to create some opportunities and keep the pressure on them."

How It Happened
Following a few early opportunities in the game's opening stages, Loyola jumped in front in the 13th minute.  A pair of pinpoint passes from juniors Madison Laudeman and Aleksa Tataryn, respectively, set up a golden chance for senior Jenna Szczesny, who slotted her attempt inside the far post from 15 yards out to give the Ramblers an early 1-0 advantage.

Valparaiso came close to putting itself back on level terms just over five minutes following Szczesny's tally when Maria Broecker fired just wide of junior goalkeeper Kate Moran's near post.  Tataryn nearly doubled the lead for the Maroon & Gold in the 35th minute, unleashing a rocket from 10 yards out that forced a fine stop out of Kezia Gessell, the Crusader netminder, as Loyola was forced to settle for a one-goal edge at the intermission.

The Ramblers continued to frustrate the hosts in the second half, limiting any chances for Valparaiso to net an equalizer.  Loyola kept up its pressure in the offensive third, with both Tataryn and senior Madison Kimball firing high of goal as time wore on.

Loyola was able to find its insurance goal through a set piece opportunity in the 75th minute when a Tataryn corner kick ultimately found its way to the feet of Laudeman.  The junior deposited her close-range effort into the back of the net to double the Loyola lead, 2-0, as the Ramblers cruised to the final whistle.

Looking At The Numbers
- Szczesny netted her team-high ninth goal of the season in the first half.  The Hoffman Estates, Ill. native has found the back of the net at least once in four of Loyola's five Valley contests.
- Laudeman enjoyed a career night on the offensive end, finishing with a goal and an assist, while also helping lead a Loyola defense that limited Valparaiso to just three shots, none of which came on target.
- Tataryn was credited with her fourth assist of the year on Szczesny's goal, a mark that now has her tied for the team lead in the category.
- By virtue of this evening's victory, Loyola has officially booked its spot in the upcoming Missouri Valley Conference Women's Soccer Championship.
