CLEARWATER, Fla. (March 7, 2018)
In Short
Taylor Brummell's RBI single in the first inning provided all of the offense Northern Kentucky (7-4) would need as it picked up a 2-0 victory over Loyola University Chicago (7-8) this morning. Loyola junior righthander
Keenan Dolezal suffered a hard-luck loss, pitching a five-hitter, while striking out two.
How It Happened
The Norse wasted little time taking the lead, plating their first run on Taylor Brummell's two-out, RBI single in the top of the first inning.
Loyola put runners on in both the first and second innings on a
Shannon McGee single, and a
Jordyn Cordell, respectively, but the Ramblers weren't able to manufacture a run against NKU starter Taylor Ginther, who allowed only three hits but walked four.
Northern Kentucky pushed across an insurance run in the top of the fifth on Josie Frazier's run-scoring single that put the Ramblers in a 2-0 hole. After Cordell's second-inning double, Loyola went hitless until the bottom of the seventh when it mounted a rally against Ginther.
Cordell led off the Ramblers' last turn at-bat with a base hit to center and
Emily Borg followed with a base on balls, bringing the winning run to the plate. A
Jamie O'Brien sacrifice bunt moved the runners up a base and
Ashley Parenti coaxed a walk from Ginther to load the bags, but the Norse were able to escape unscathed and held on for a 2-0 victory.
A Look At The Numbers
- Cordell went 2-for-3 to lead a Rambler offense that had only one other hit, McGee's lead-off single in the bottom of the first inning.
- Toree Stalter went 2-for-3 for NKU.
