Â
In Short
Lanie Callaghan's three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning provided all of the scoring as Valparaiso (19-21, 6-12 MVC) pulled out a 3-0 victory over Loyola University Chicago (21-21, 7-11 MVC) in game one of a doubleheader today at Loyola Softball Park. The game was a makeup of a postponed contest in Valparaiso last week, so the Crusaders served as the home team.
Â
How It Happened
Loyola was unable to capitalize on a handful of scoring chances, stranding 10 runners in the game, including nine in the first four innings alone. The Ramblers squandered golden opportunities in the second and third innings, leaving the bases loaded in each frame.
Â
In the second inning, Loyola packed the bags on aÂ
Jamie O'Brien single and walks toÂ
Jordyn Cordell andÂ
Peyton DeChant, but Valpo starter Kelsie Packard wiggled out of the jam whenÂ
Shannon McGee hit a bullet toward first baseman Brittany Anderson that she slowed with her glove and deflected to second baseman Carly Trepanier, who retired McGee at first base to end the threat.
Â
Once again, the Ramblers loaded the bases with one out in the third inning, only to come up with nothing to show for it. After stranding two more base runners in the fourth, Loyola's offense cooled off, recording just one base runner –Â
Katie Polaski – on a seventh-inning walk.
Â
Loyola righthanderÂ
Keenan Dolezal pitched a gem and made just one mistake on the day, albeit a costly one. The junior scattered six hits in a complete-game effort, striking out four, but Callaghan's three-run homer in the fifth inning accounted for all of the game's scoring.
Â
A Look At The Numbers
- All five of Loyola's hits were recorded by the No. 2-6 spots in the lineup today.
- Brooke Wilson continued her torrid hitting, ripping a double to right field in the third inning.
- Callaghan went 2-for-2 with three RBI for Valparaiso.
- Packard struck out a career-best 11 Ramblers to earn her third win of the year.
