CHICAGO (April 25, 2018)
In Short
Madison Veres struck out three and allowed three earned runs in just her third career start, but Loyola University Chicago (21-23) dropped a 4-1 decision at local rival Northwestern (30-13) this afternoon. The contest was the Ramblers' final non-conference game of the 2018 regular season.
How It Happened
Northwestern got on the board in the bottom of the first inning, capitalizing on a lead-off walk to Sabrina Rabin, who would steal second base to get into scoring position and eventually score on Morgan Nelson's sacrifice fly.
The Wildcats added to their lead with single runs in both the second and third innings before Loyola cut into the deficit in the top of the fourth.
Shannon McGee led off the fourth with a double to the gap in left center, moved up a base on a groundout, and scored on a throwing error by Northwestern third baseman Mac Dunlap, to trim the Ramblers' deficit to 3-1.
A two-out double off the bat of
Katie Kasubke in the sixth inning put Loyola in position to slice the gap in half, but Wildcats starter Morgan Newport got out of the inning without further damage to keep the Ramblers in a two-run hole.
Northwestern salted away the contest in its half of the sixth on Rachel Lewis' RBI single that plated Rabin, who had led off the inning with a triple.
