CHICAGO (April 7, 2018)
In Short
Alyssa Wiebel hit a two-run home run and Morgan Day held the Loyola University Chicago (16-15, 3-6 MVC) in check as Illinois State (13-23, 4-5 MVC) picked up a 3-0 victory this afternoon at a frigid Loyola Softball Park.
How It Happened
The Redbirds wasted little time getting on the board, scoring in the top of the first inning on Shannon Felde's two-out RBI single to grab a 1-0 lead before Loyola swung the bats.
Despite managing only two hits all game off Day, the Ramblers had plenty of scoring chances on the afternoon, including in the first few innings as they stranded five runners on base in the first three frames, while failing to dent the scoreboard.
Illinois State provided Day with some breathing room in the fourth when Alyssa Wiebel crushed a
Kiley Jones offering over the fence in left center to extend the lead to 3-0.
Loyola had its best chance to tie the game in the fifth when
Shannon McGee walked and
Katie Kasubke reached on an ISU error, but Day worked her way out of trouble, keeping Loyola off the board.
A Look At The Numbers
- With her fifth-inning walk, McGee extended her streak of consecutive games reaching base safely to 26.
- Jones was saddled with a hard-luck loss on a day temperatures barely climbed above freezing, striking out three and allowing only two earned runs, in a complete-game effort.
Up Next
Loyola and Illinois State are scheduled to play a doubleheader tomorrow at noon, weather permitting.
