TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (May 6, 2018)
Â
In Short
Amanda Guercio's two-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning provided the difference as host Indiana State (25-27, 12-14 MVC) rallied from a 3-1 deficit to earn a 5-3 victory over Loyola University Chicago (23-27, 9-16 MVC) this afternoon at Price Field. The loss spoiled a terrific day at the plate for Loyola outfielderÂ
Shannon McGee, who went 3-for-4.Â
Â
How It Happened
Indiana State grabbed the lead in the second inning thanks to an unearned run. Brooke Mann started the Sycamores rally with a one-out double and one out later, pinch runner Kristen Kelly scored on a Loyola fielding error.
Â
After opening the game with back-to-back singles in the first inning, McGee andÂ
Jordyn Cordell repeated the feat in the third to spark Loyola's comeback.Â
Brooke Wilson knotted the score when she whacked a double to center field that scored McGee and put two runners in scoring position.Â
Allyson Ivey followed with a walk to load the bases andÂ
Jamie O'Brien, who has been red-hot at the plate all weekend, slapped a single to right that plated Cordell and put the Ramblers on top, 2-1, and chased Stober from the game.Â
Â
Sophia Swain helped Loyola add to its lead by greeting reliever Abbey Kruzel with a sac fly that extended the advantage to 3-1.
Â
Indiana State rallied back, capitalizing on a lead-off walk and a Loyola fielding miscue to plate a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth to make it a brand, new ballgame, tied at 3.
Â
The Sycamores reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the sixth when Amanda Guercio doubled to right on a 1-2 pitch from Jones to score Bella Peterson and Shaye Barton, who had reached on consecutive singles to start the inning.
Â
Loyola staged one final rally in the seventh when
Katie Kasubke reached on a one-out single to bring the tying run to the plate, but Kruzel got a double-play ground ball to get out of the inning and squelch the threat.
Â
A Look At The Numbers
- McGee's three-hit effort was her third of the season. She finished the season with a .377 batting average, falling just shy of becoming the third Rambler to hit .400.
- Cordell went 2-for-3 and Wilson drove in a run to give her a personal-best 19 RBI on the year.
- Kiley Jones struck out two and scattered five hits, while allowing only two earned runs, but took another tough-luck loss.
Â
Up Next
Loyola finishes the season with a 23-27 overall record and a 9-16 mark in Valley play. The Ramblers are set to return all but two players from this year's team in 2019.
