Box Score
In Short…
Four different Ramblers found the back of the net as the Loyola University Chicago women's soccer team rolled to a 4-0 victory over visiting Purdue Fort Wayne this evening at Loyola Soccer Park. Tonight's win sees the Ramblers climb to 3-2-0 on the year, while the Mastodons drop to 1-3-1.
Coach Bimbi's Thoughts…
"I think we learned a lot about our team tonight. We were a little flat in the first half, but we were fortunate to still get two goals out of it. In the second half, we came out and dominated. In the end, it put a lot of pressure on them in the attacking third and we scored two and built enough pressure to maybe get a couple more, while holding them at bay and not giving away a lot of dangerous chances at the defensive end."
How It Happened
Purdue Fort Wayne controlled the action early on a muggy early evening in Rogers Park. Kailyn Wade hit the post just 41 seconds in before Kayla Wisniewski had her headed attempt off of a corner cleared off the line by senior
Taylor Lambouris in the 14
th minute of play.
Loyola broke the scoreless deadlock just before the half-hour mark. Sophomore
Jenna Ross sent a pass towards the penalty spot the connected flush with junior
Aleksa Tataryn, who rifled a one-time effort past Purdue Fort Wayne goalkeeper Haley Lydon to make it 1-0 in the 27
th minute. Tataryn found herself in the mix again with three minutes remaining in the first half. The junior delivered a corner kick towards the far post that freshman
Abby Swanson managed to fight over the line to send the Maroon & Gold into halftime with a 2-0 advantage.
In stark contrast to the opening stanza, Loyola dominated the pace of play coming out of the intermission, limiting opportunities for the Mastodons. Senior
Jenna Szczesny sent an uncontested look at goal just high 32 seconds into the half, while fellow senior
Vivien Schultz's bid for a first career goal trickled narrowly wide of the far post in the 58
th minute.
Szczesny used a great piece of individual skill to add a third tally for the Ramblers in the 71
st minute. The senior evaded a pair of Mastodon defenders inside the 18-yard box before toe poking her attempt in at the far post from eight yards out to extend the margin to 3-0. Senior
Claire Oberle tacked on another for the Maroon & Gold with just over eight minutes to play, finishing off a feed from Ross, as Loyola closed out a 4-0 victory.
Looking At The Numbers
- Szczesny's second-half tally from this evening moves her within two goals of Mary Dale (2003-06) for third place on the program's all-time record board in the category. The Hoffman Estates, Ill. native currently leads the Valley in goals (3), assists (3) and overall points (9).
- Junior goalkeeper
Kate Moran added three saves en route to recording the first shutout of her collegiate career.
- Following last season's 6-1 victory over the Mastodons in Fort Wayne, Ind., Loyola has now outscored Purdue Fort Wayne by a 10-1 margin over the past two meetings between the two teams.
