CHICAGO (September 15, 2018)
Â
In Short
Nia Robinson produced a match-high 23 kills to help Northwestern (10-2) rally for a 19-25, 25-12, 29-27, 25-18 victory over Loyola University Chicago (8-4) tonight at Gentile Arena in the final match of the Chicago Cup. The Ramblers, who had three players reach double figures in kills tonight, finished the two-day tournament against city rivals with a 1-2 record.
Â
How It Happened
Things couldn't have gone much better for the Ramblers in the first set as they hit .267 (11-3-30) to pick up a 25-19 win. With the score deadlocked at 8-8,Â
Morgan Gresham slammed a kill, which was followed by consecutive blocks, to put Loyola on top to stay. From there, Northwestern scratched its way within two points on a pair of occasions, the last coming at 14-12, but a kill and then a block fromÂ
Elle Van Grinsven pushed the lead back to four (16-12) and Loyola never looked back.
Â
The Wildcats' offense, which sputtered in the opening set, began to click in set two and put the Ramblers in an early 10-2 hole on their way to a 25-12 victory in which they hit .364 (10-2-22).
Â
Set three was a barnburner, as Loyola overcame a six-point deficit by using a 9-2 run to seize a 16-15 advantage. The teams battled back and forth the remainder of the set before a controversial call took away what would have been set point from Loyola, allowing Northwestern to rally for a 29-27 victory.Â
Â
Much like in set two, another fast start by Northwestern proved too much for Loyola to overcome as the Ramblers fell, 25-18, in the fourth set. Four straight Wildcats points capped a set-opening 10-4 run that put the contest out of reach.Â
Â
