In Short…
Grant Stoneman's Golden Goal was the only shot the found the back of the net in Loyola's 1-0 overtime victory. The shot came off a corner kick from
Fabian Lifka in the 94
th minute of the extra frame.
Coach Jones' Thoughts
"We're getting back to playing Loyola soccer, which is work hard, grind it out, defend hard and not giving up easy chances and easy goals," head coach
Neil Jones said. "Then someone needs to step up huge and make a play - like what
Fabian Lifka and
Grant Stoneman did today."
How It Happened
In a match that struggled to produce a lot of early chances,
Aidan Megally registered the game's first shot attempt in the 13
th minute that went wide right, followed by a
Tucker Stephenson attempt that went wide left approximately seven minutes later.
Megally got another attempt off in the 27
th minute, only to see the shot blocked and sail out of bounds, setting up the first of four corner kicks for Loyola in the first half.
The teams exchanged uneventful corner kicks as the clock began to wind down on the first half. Looking to catch the DePaul goalkeeper napping in the 39
th minute,
Oskar Gustafsson ripped a shot from about 35 yards out, but the attempt sailed just high of the crossbar.
The first half closed without a single shot on goal, with the Ramblers holding a 4-3 edge in shot attempts.
Quality scoring chances remained few and far between in the second half, with the first shot on goal of the half coming in the 72
nd minute off the foot of Stephenson. With both teams unable to score, the physical play picked up to the tune of four Rambler cautions and two for the Blue Demons, as well as 11 total fouls called in the second half alone.
Fabian Becerra got a shot on goal in the 89
th minute, but the match remained scoreless through the end of regulation.
In the 94
th minute,
Fabian Lifka executed a perfect corner kick that scraped the head of
Grant Stoneman, giving the St. Charles, Ill. native his first golden goal of the season and send the Ramblers and the fans home happy.
A Look at the Numbers
-The overtime victory was the first for the Ramblers since August 25, 2017 at Xavier.
-While the goal was Stoneman's first Golden Goal with the Ramblers, it went down as his fourth game-winning tally in Rogers Park.
-The Ramblers outshot the Blue Demons 13-4, and recorded more shots on goal as well (5-1). The aforementioned occurrence is the second time this season Loyola finished a match ahead in both categories.
-
