CHICAGO (September 24, 2018)
In Short
Behind 11 kills apiece from
Quinn Spieker and
Elle Van Grinsven, Loyola University Chicago (11-4, 3-0 MVC) knocked off defending Missouri Valley Conference champion Missouri State (7-9, 0-3 MVC), 25-22, 25-18, 25-20, this evening at Gentile Arena. The win is just the Ramblers' second over the Bears in 13 meetings and gives Loyola its best start to conference play since opening Horizon League action with three straight victories in 2004.
How It Happened
Loyola came out firing on all cylinders at the outset of the first set, scoring the first four points of the match before Missouri State countered with a 6-0 run to grab a two-point lead. The teams would play a closely contested set until Spieker delivered a kill that was followed by a Bears error that put the Ramblers ahead for good at, 23-21.
In what seemed like a carbon copy of the opener, the Ramblers would notch the first four points in set two, but Missouri State answered with four straight tallies of its own to even the proceedings at 4-4.
Morgan Gresham put an end to that MSU run by drilling a kill that gave Loyola the lead for good and the Ramblers' advantage sat at 14-9 before the Bears charged back and closed within a point (15-14). However, Loyola had an answer yet again, thwarting the comeback attempt with a 6-1 spurt that featured four blocks in an eventual 25-18 victory in which it hit .333 (12-2-30).
The Ramblers raced out to a 7-0 lead to start the third set to put the Bears away in an eventual 25-20 decision. Missouri State crept back within two points, at 16-14, but Loyola provided itself with some breathing room thanks to a Maciagowski kill and a
Lauren Caprini service ace as the lead was extended to four. Loyola's lead was trimmed to 23-20 late in the set, but the Ramblers closed out their first-ever sweep of MSU when the Bears recorded an error and Maciagowski followed with her sixth kill of the match.
A Look At The Numbers
- Van Grinsven clubbed 10 or more kills for the fifth time in the last six outings and collected three digs and three blocks.
