Â
Coach Moser's Thoughts
"Indiana State kept fighting back and our guys didn't panic and stepped up and hit some big shots."
Â
How It Happened
Some hot shooting from beyond the arc helped Loyola build a six-point lead at the under 12 media timeout in the first half. The Ramblers knocked down 4 of their first 5 tries from long range, and after falling behind 12-9, got three consecutive triples, two from
Cooper Kaifes, as part of a 12-0 run that gave Loyola a 21-12 edge. A stout defense helped fuel that spurt as the Ramblers held Indiana State scoreless for almost six minutes.
Â
After the Sycamores snapped the scoreless drought with a layup from Tyreke Key, Loyola reeled off seven unanswered points, the first five coming from
Aher Uguak, as the Loyola lead ballooned to 28-14, its largest of the half.
Â
Indiana State clawed back into the contest, closing the half on a 16-8 run, but, despite
Clayton Custer and
Marques Townes not hitting a field goal in the opening 20 minutes, Loyola took a 36-30 lead into the locker room at the break.
Â
Loyola scored seven of the first nine points of the second half, five of those coming courtesy of Townes, to bump the lead back to double figures at 43-32. Indiana State closed within five, at 47-42, before Custer stemmed the tide with his first bucket of a game, a three from the left corner.
Â
Minutes later, however, the Sycamores would creep their way back within a possession, cutting Loyola's lead to 52-49 on Allante Holston's layup with 8:29 remaining.
Â
Isaiah Bujdoso's three-pointer from the right corner with 4:11 left put the Ramblers ahead 66-58 and from there, Indiana State got no closer than six points.
