Addie Barnes produced a match-high 11 kills to power Loyola University Chicago (10-6, 3-0 MVC) to a 25-21, 25-11, 25-19 victory over Indiana State (2-12, 0-4 MVC) tonight at ISU Arena. With the win, the Ramblers equal their best-ever start to Missouri Valley Conference play (3-0) and run their win streak to three matches.
Â
How It Happened
Despite getting off to a quick start that saw it score the first four points of the opening set, Loyola watched the host Sycamores rebound to reel off six consecutive tallies to snag a 6-4 advantage. That edge stood at 10-8 until Barnes delivered three kills in a 5-0 spurt that turned a two-point deficit into a 13-10 Loyola lead it would never relinquish. Indiana State closed within a point twice, the final time coming at 19-18, however four unanswered points, two via kills from Barnes, pushed the Ramblers' lead to 23-18 and they would hold on for a 25-21 victory.
Â
Loyola took control early and never looked back in set two, coasting to a 25-11 decision. Barnes was a catalyst early, tallying a kill and an ace, while also teaming with
Taylor Venuto on a block, to help the Ramblers to a 4-1 lead. Three more blocks were part of a 7-2 spurt that put the contest out of reach and extended the Loyola lead to 18-8. Behind a nearly unstoppable offensive assault, Loyola hit .407 (12-127) to breeze to the win.Â
Â
Stringing together an 8-1 run, Loyola broke a 10-10 stalemate in the third set, getting a pair of aces from
Kayla Kraus during that decisive stretch as it grabbed the reins on the road to a 25-19 victory.
