In Short
Led by
Quinn Spieker's 18 kills, Loyola University Chicago (17-8, 10-2 MVC) earned a hard-fought, 25-21, 23-25, 25-22, 25-21 victory over visiting Indiana State (5-17, 3-9 MVC) this afternoon at Gentile Arena, setting a single-season program record for victories in Missouri Valley Conference play with 10.
How It Happened
Loyola came out on fire, taking the first four points in the first set to snag an early lead, but Indiana State would storm back, assembling a run of eight straight tallies to turn a four-point Loyola edge into a 12-8 Sycamores advantage. The Ramblers chipped away at the deficit, eventually using a 4-0 spurt to wipe away a one-point deficit to grab hold of a 21-18 lead. Indiana State worked back within a point, at 21-20, but back-to-back
Taylor Venuto kills stemmed the tide and allowed Loyola to hold on for a 25-21 decision.
Another quick start gave Loyola an early 6-1 lead in the second set, but the Ramblers were unable to maintain the edge. Trailing 10-7, Indiana State secured the lead for good thanks to a 7-1 run that featured two kills and a pair of blocks from Madeline Williams, for a 14-11 edge that would grow to as many as four points. The Ramblers trailed 23-19 before applying pressure late in the set. A pair of kills from Venuto and aces from
Katie Mather and
Addie Barnes helped slice the deficit to 24-23, but a Nikkie White kill closed out ISU's 25-23 victory that evened the match at a set apiece.
In the third set, it was the Sycamores' turn to get off to a strong start as they built an early three-point advantage. With her squad down, 18-16, Barnes delivered consecutive kills and Venuto and
Heather Kocken paired up for a block to provide the Ramblers with a 19-18 lead. A Rambler service error followed to tie the score for the 10
thtime in the set, but Barnes and Spieker, who combined for 11 kills in the set, delivered consecutive kills for a 21-19 Loyola lead it would never relinquish on the way to a 25-22 win.
Loyola grabbed control of set four early, then held on for a 25-21 decision. Four blocks were part of a set-opening 6-1 burst that put the Ramblers on top and their lead would balloon to as many as eight points, at 22-14. Indiana State refused to go down without a fight, charging back within 24-21, but a Sycamore service error finished off a 25-21 Loyola victory.
A Look At The Numbers

- Maddy Moser totaled a match-high 28 digs and Kocken contributed eight kills and five blocks as Loyola surpassed its win total from all of last season (16).
- White led Indiana State with 16 kills.
- This marks the first time since 2004 that Loyola has won 10 or more conference contests. In 2004, the Ramblers recorded a 10-4 mark in Horizon League play.
- Today's win also guarantees the Ramblers their first winning record in league competition since 2005 when they were 8-6 in Horizon League matches.
