Loyola Claims MVC Second Seed, Shuts Down Valparaiso, 3-0

Loyola earns opening round bye in the MVC Tournament with a 3-0 victory in its regular season finale.

In Short
The Loyola University Chicago men's soccer team shut down Valparaiso, 3-0 to conclude the regular season tonight at Brown Field in Valparaiso, Ind. The Ramblers finish with a 10-4-3, (5-2-3 MVC) record and have secured the No. 2 seed and an opening round bye in the MVC Tournament, which begins on Wednesday, Nov. 13.

Coach Neil Jones' Thoughts
"Tonight was an excellent team performance against a tricky and dangerous Valpo team," Jones said. "Gaining a top 2 seed was a goal of ours from day one and to win and get a shutout on the road to achieve that is a testament to our guys work rate, character and attitude throughout the regular season. Now we enter the post season which is an all new level of intensity. We're excited to host the tournament at Loyola this year and play in front of our own fans."

How It Happened
Justin Sukow and Fabian Becerra each found the back of the net to put the Ramblers ahead in the first half. Sukow later recorded his second goal of the night as the deciding factor for Loyola.

Chase Wright was able to maintain control of the ball in the 41st minute, surrounded by Valpo defenders. Wright completed a beautiful pass around the defense to Sukow, who was able to tap in a goal. With a minute to go in the half, Becerra blasted a missile from 35 yards out that went right into the net, giving the Ramblers a solid 2-0 lead to enter halftime.

Valpo's best opportunity to close the gap came in the second half, when Mason Marcey fired a shot on goal in the 74th minute that was saved by Marcel Kampman.

But, Loyola would prevail as Sukow scored for the second time in the evening. Valpo passed the ball back to goalkeeper Jorn-Jan van de Beld, but Sukow got to it first. Sukow dribbled around van de Beld, went one-on-one with a Valpo defender and was able to score in the lower left corner.

A Look At The Numbers
  • Loyola out-shot Valparaiso 15-7, including 10-2 in shots on goal. The Ramblers also claimed the corner-kick advantage, 3-2.
  • Marcel Kampman registered his seventh shutout this season, which is tied for first in the MVC with Missouri State and Bradley.
  • Justin Sukow had his first two-goal match of the season, marking eight goals this year and moving him up to third in the MVC.
