In Short…
Loyola began the 2019 season with two victories, both in low-scoring fashion. Second baseman
Katie Polaski delivered big hits in both contests to pace the Ramblers' offense.
Coach Tylka's Thoughts
It was a great first day. Anytime you can get two wins is always a good day," head coach
Jeff Tylka said. "We had some great pitching, defense and timely hitting. I'm just really proud of the team for finding a way to win even though it wasn't pretty at times."
How It Happened
Kiley Jones got the game one start for the Ramblers and began the year with a bang, tossing a complete-game shutout in the team's opener against UM-Kansas City. Jones only surrendered two hits and struck out four, two of which came in the opening inning.
After the Ramblers threatened but couldn't convert in the first,
Katie Kasubke opened the second inning with a double to center that gave Loyola a runner in scoring position with nobody out. Two batters later, Polaski roped a double to left that brought Kasubke home and gave Loyola its 1-0 lead that held throughout.
It turned out to be the only run support Jones would need. The ace of the pitching staff retired 12 of the next 13 UMKC hitters to cruise into the seventh inning unscathed. The Kangaroo bats came to life in the seventh inning, knocking on the door with ducks on the pond and two outs. Head coach
Jeff Tylka stuck with his starter and it paid off as Jones got the next hitter to ground out and put win number one in the books.
In game two, Polaski came through again with another RBI extra-base hit. Her second inning triple brought home
Abbey Jacobsen and
Nova Sinskul to put Loyola up 2-0. Making her Rambler debut in right field,
Jessica Shields knocked Polaski home with a double two batters later to extend the second inning lead to 3-0.
Detroit Mercy got one back in the third, but
Keenan Dolezal limited the damage in the circle and kept Loyola in front. Dolezal tossed 4.2 strong innings before handing the ball to
Madison Veres who took it the rest of the way with 2.1 shutout innings that kept the Titans' bats silent. Game two finished with uneventful sixth and seventh innings that allowed the Ramblers to sweep their Friday slate.
