In Short
Quinn Spieker totaled 20 kills and 24 digs, but it wasn't enough as Loyola University Chicago (1-2) saw host Toledo (1-2) rally for a 15-25, 26-24, 15-25, 27-25, 18-16 victory at Savage Arena tonight in the final match of the Blue & Gold Tournament. Loyola redshirt senior
Maddy Moser set a single-match program record by recording 40 digs tonight, bettering former teammate Stephanie Kinane's previous school standard by one dig.Â
Â
How It Happened
Loyola strung together nine consecutive scores to turn a two-point deficit into a 17-10 lead, with
Heather Kocken keying that decisive run by tallying three kills and a pair of blocks. The Ramblers were never threatened from that point forward in the set, and hit .276 (13-5-29) to roll to a 25-15 victory.
Â
A 5-0 run that featured four kills from
Quinn Spieker and an ace courtesy of
Maddy Moser erased a three-point deficit and put the Ramblers on top, 11-9. Later, that lead increased to 20-14, seemingly putting Loyola in the driver's seat in the match. The host Rockets had other ideas, however, and stunned Loyola by registering 12 of the next 16 points to secure a 26-24 decision and tie the match at a set apiece.
Â
After falling behind by three points early, Loyola took control of the set thanks to a 12-3 run that included three kills from Spieker and a pair of Moser aces, to open up a 14-8 lead. The Ramblers would not allow their lead to slip lower than four points the remainder of the way, as they coasted to a 25-15 victory to reclaim the lead in the match.
Â
Loyola led by as many as three points in the fourth set and held a 19-16 advantage after a kill from Spieker. Moments later, the Ramblers' lead stood at 22-20, but Toledo stormed back and accounted for seven of the final 10 points of the set for a 27-25 win that sent Loyola to a fifth set for the second time in as many days.
Â
The Ramblers found themselves trailing by as many as three points (8-5) in the final set, but reeled off three straight scores, the last coming on a block from
Elle Van Grinsven, to tie the score at 8-8. From there, it was a back-and-forth battle and Loyola found itself with set point on a pair of occasions, but was unable to close out the match as Toledo recorded three of the final four tallies to earn an 18-16 victory.
