CHICAGO (September 21, 2019)
In Short
Taylor Venuto's team-high 15 kills weren't enough as Loyola University Chicago (7-6) saw its four-match winning streak came to a halt with a 22-25, 24-26, 25-27 loss to UIC (11-3) tonight at the Chicago Cup in Lincoln Park. The Ramblers finish play at the tournament with a 2-1 record and are now 6-3 in their last nine matches.
How It Happened
Loyola put together a stretch of five unanswered points to turn a one-point deficit into a 10-6 lead, with
Addie Barnes providing the final two points of that stretch in the first set. Moments later, after UIC had rallied within a point (11-10), the Ramblers constructed a 7-2 spurt, capped by an
Elle Van Grinsven/
Heather Kocken block, to boost their lead to 18-12. From there however, the Flames outscored Loyola, 13-4, to escape with a 25-22 decision.
Set two had plenty of drama and numerous comebacks that ultimately resulted in a 26-24 UIC victory. Early on, Loyola sprinted out to a 7-2 lead before UIC surged ahead, 10-9, for a short-lived edge. Three
Addie Barnes kills were part of a 6-3 burst that moved the Ramblers back on top, 17-14, but the Flames countered by registering seven of the next eight points to grab a 21-18 lead. Loyola refused to go down without a fight and roared back to post six of the next eight points, three on kills from Barnes and two from
Taylor Venuto, to reclaim the lead at 24-23. The Ramblers couldn't close it out however, and saw UIC tally the next three points to slip by and earn a 26-24 victory.
Loyola worked hard to overcome a five-point deficit in the third set, slowly chipping away at the margin. Three Venuto kills were part of a 5-1 surge that turned a three-point hole into a 22-21 Ramblers lead, their first of the set. Following a UIC point that tied the score, Venuto and
Quinn Spieker delivered back-to-back stops to give Loyola set point and a 24-22 advantage. It wasn't meant to be for the Ramblers on this night however, as UIC stormed back and picked up a 27-25 win to complete the sweep.
