How It Happened
Loyola had a bit of a rough start in the first set, allowing George Mason to go on a 12-2 run. Following two Loyola timeouts, the Ramblers made their way to a slight 15-7 comeback with a
Luke Denton and
Anton Frank block and an eventual 3-0 scoring run. Ultimately, Loyola produced a negative hitting percentage despite recording 28 attacks. George Mason won the set, 25-15.
Seeing improvement in set two, Schlothauer launched a couple kills to help the Ramblers redeem themselves for an early 3-2 lead. The teams exchanged back and forth points before George Mason pulled ahead, 8-5 and forced a Loyola timeout. Denton and Frank came up with another well-timed block to come closer, 9-8.
Devin Joslyn then tallied back-to-back kills followed by a huge block from
Ian Cowen, Joslyn and Piekarski to take a 13-12 lead. Despite the Ramblers hitting a much improved .242 percent, George Mason was able to pull away in the final points. Piekarski recorded a huge solo block to close the deficit, 22-19, but Mason took set two, 25-20.
George Mason went on a 4-0 run to lead 12-7 in the third set, forcing another Loyola timeout. The Ramblers put pressure on George Mason with kills from Schlothauer, Frank and Piekarski, but GMU held their lead, 18-12. Loyola couldn't come back strong enough and the Patriots took set three, 25-19.
