Ramblers Close Fall Slate With Fifth-Place Finish At Flyer Invitational

Johnson shares fourth on individual leaderboard

KETTERING, Ohio (October 19, 2021) – For the second time in as many days, graduate student Devin Johnson led the charge as the Loyola University Chicago men's golf team capped off its 2021 fall season at the Flyer Invitational in Kettering, Ohio.

The Maroon & Gold turned in a final-round 297 at the NCR Country Club (par 71, 7,004 yards) to finish as part of a tie for fifth place alongside former Horizon League foe Cleveland State (298-290-295) at 883 (288-298-297).

Led by individual medalist Bryce Haney (70-71-68=209), Wright State (287-284-277=848) rolled to the team crown.

"Obviously a little disappointed with our finish to the fall coming off two pretty good weeks," Loyola head men's golf coach Erik Hoops said.  "We just made some costly errors on one of the harder courses we see most years.  We've got some good positives to build off of, but still some areas where we need to improve in during the offseason."

Johnson wrapped up an impressive fall season with a one-over-par 72 today just outside of Dayton.  The Geneva, Ill. product's final-round effort saw him close the 54-hole event with an even-par 213 (69-72-72), earning a share of fourth place.  Joining Johnson in the top 20 was junior Timmy Crawford, who closed out a strong fall slate of his own with a two-over-par 73 to finish tied for 16th at 219 (72-74-73).

Graduate student Ryan Magee was just a stroke off matching his 18-hole season low, handing in a three-over-par 74 that saw him climb into a tie for 45th with a 229 (78-77-74).  Junior Zach Walsh finished a shot in front of Magee, tying for 41st at 228 (75-75-78) following a 78.  Fellow junior Dylan Ellis rounded out the Rambler starting five on the day with an 81 to bring his tally to 232 (72-79-81) as he tied for 53rd.

Graduate student Nick Welden, who saw action as an individual, posted an 83 to place 69th with a 249 (81-85-83).

"Another great week for Devin and a solid week for Timmy," Hoops continued.  "They've both had some fall slates that I know won't go unnoticed.  It'll be nice to have a break for a bit.  We'll come back hungry and ready to compete in the spring."

Loyola begins the spring portion of its 2021-22 schedule at the Earl Yestingsmeier Match Play, February 7-8, in Dade City, Fla.
