SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (Nov. 12, 2021)
In Short…
Today started the semifinal round of the Missouri Valley Conference men's soccer tournament, where the No. 2 Loyola University Chicago Ramblers took on the No. 4 University of Evansville Aces. Following an intense match between the two teams, the Aces are the ones who will get their chance to secure the automatic NCAA tournament bid against No. 1 Missouri State on Sunday.
The Ramblers and Aces battled throughout the entire match, even getting some free soccer out of it. But following two periods of overtime, the game went into penalty kicks. Evansville edged out Loyola on the eighth attempt, resulting in the Ramblers getting knocked out of the tournament.
What Happened…
The Ramblers took control early in the match, although the scoreboard would tell a different story. Evansville scored in the first five minutes on a penalty kick due to a hand ball in the box, resulting in the early 1-0 lead over Loyola. However, it only took 15 minutes for defender
Andrew Mitchell to score the equalizer, getting the ball past the Aces' goalkeeper from beyond the box, keeping the Ramblers in the match.
Following that goal, the Ramblers kept their momentum moving forward. Off a ball deflected by Evansville players,
Tyler Biggs was able to get a cross pass to
Alex Moskal, who scored Loyola's second goal of the match in the 36th minute. This gave Loyola a 2-1 advantage over the Aces. It didn't last long as the Aces scored a goal of their own in the 39th minute to make the game tied at 2-2 heading into the half.
Once both teams were back on the field for the second, it became a very physical battle. No one was able to score, which took the game into overtime. From there, neither team was able to grab the golden goal, although it wasn't for a lack of trying.
Marcel Kampman made tremendous saves in the final 20 minutes to keep the Ramblers in the game.
After 110 minutes of play, the game was still not decided, which meant the teams were going to penalty kicks. Both teams scored their first seven penalty kicks before Evansville's goalkeeper made a save on the eighth, which sealed the win for the Aces. Although the match ended in a tie, Evansville moved on with the 8-7 win in PK's.
Looking At The Numbers…
- Mitchell scored his first goal of the season and fourth of his career to give his team the momentum needed keep the game alive. He also played phenomenally on defense with Michael Hong and Lukas Ender to prevent scoring opportunities for Evansville, keeping the Aces to only five shots on the night.
- Moskal's goal in the 35th minute was just the third of his career and second of the season following the cross from Tyler Biggs.
- The two-time MVC Player of the Year Billy Hency also made sure to contribute to the team's offensive pressure. He had five shots on the night, with two of those being on goal.
- The Ramblers outshot the Aces tonight, putting up 23 shots to their five throughout all 110 minutes.
