Loyola Puts Out Flames With Big Second Half

Ryan Schwieger notches 22 points as Ramblers defeat UIC, 80-63

CHICAGO (November 20, 2021)

In Short
Ryan Schwieger scored a team-high 22 points off the bench and Loyola University Chicago (4-0) used a big second half to earn an 80-63 victory over crosstown rival UIC (2-2) this afternoon at Gentile Arena for its 26th straight win on its home floor. Dating back to last season, the Ramblers have prevailed in 23 of their last 25 games overall.

Coach Valentine's Thoughts
"I thought it was good for our guys to be challenged. UIC put us in a position we haven't been in yet and it was good to see how the guys responded to being down. It was great to see guys step up and make big plays when we needed them."

How It Happened
Loyola got off to a slow start and watched as UIC ran out to a 21-11 lead in the first half. A Lucas Williamson three-pointer sparked a 17-4 Ramblers surge that was punctuated by four straight points from Schwieger, and also included a conventional three-point play from Williamson, as Loyola moved ahead, 28-25.

The Ramblers led 33-31 at the half then got a quick bucket from Jacob Hutson and a free throw from Marquise Kennedy to push their lead to 36-31 in the opening minute of the second period. UIC would use a 14-6 run, highlighted by eight straight points from Damaria Franklin, to move back on top, 45-42.

That was the last lead the Flames would hold in the contest though, and a Tate Hall jumper ignited a 24-7 run that gave Loyola the lead for good, at 66-52, and all but sealed UIC's fate. Loyola connected for five threes during that decisive stretch and Schwieger rattled off eight consecutive points himself at one point, hitting back-to-back triples and a jumper, to put the Maroon and Gold ahead to stay.

A Look at the Numbers
  • In addition to netting 22 points off the bench for the second straight outing, Schwieger added six rebounds, an assist and a steal in 25 minutes of action.
  • Williamson scored a season-high 16 points, grabbed six rebounds and had three assists and Braden Norris chipped in 12 points, three caroms and three assists.
  • Three other Ramblers – Hutson, Hall and Kennedy – tallied eight points apiece, with Hall also corralling eight rebounds.
  • Loyola committed just six turnovers on the afternoon and shot 57.1 percent (8-for-14) from three-point territory and 52.7 percent (29-for-55) from the field.
  • Franklin led UIC with 22 points and 12 rebounds.
  • Loyola has now won nine straight games versus UIC.
