Anneka Murrin continued her red-hot start to 2021 today, breaking an eight-year-old program record in the mile run as the Loyola University Chicago track & field teams opened their indoor slate at the GVSU Big Meet in Allendale, Mich.

Fresh off being named the Missouri Valley Conference Female Track Athlete of the Week following a dominant showing at the Lipscomb Winter Classic, Murrin again dazzled this afternoon inside the Kelly Sports Center. The Yarmouth, Maine product rolled to victory in 4:43.11, besting Rambler legend Gina Valgoi's previous program-best mark by just over a half second.

"Anneka ran a phenomenal race for a 10-second personal best and a school record," Loyola associate head coach
Alan Peterson said. "She looked in control and is in a great position heading into championship season."

Loyola also received big showings in the 3,000m run from the tandem of juniors
Kathleen Simms and
Claire Hengesbaugh. Simms took fourth overall in 9:35.98, moving up to third all-time in Loyola annals in the event, while Hengesbaugh was less than 10 seconds back, crossing in 9:45.86 to place seventh. Senior
Mimi Reimers paced the attack for the Maroon & Gold in the 5,000m run, taking ninth in 17:01.43.

In the men's mile run, senior
Demetri Panici narrowly missed out on moving into Loyola's all-time top 10 in the event, running a personal-best 4:09.64 to earn a seventh-place finish. Junior
Blake Buysse, like Murrin, continued his fast start to 2021 in the 5,000m run, checking in 27
th with a time of 14:47.09.

Loyola is back in action tomorrow when it sends athletes to the Indiana State Invitational in Terre Haute, Ind.
