ROSEMONT, Ill. (February 13, 2021)
Â
In Short
Crosstown rival DePaul (3-1) used a six-run first inning to wipe away a three-run deficit to earn a 14-6 victory over Loyola University Chicago (0-3) this afternoon at the DePaul Dome Tournament at The Dome in Rosemont. Despite the setback, the Ramblers tallied a season-high six runs after posting just two runs in their first two games of 2021 and scored at least one run in four of five innings against the Blue Demons.
Â
How It Happened
Loyola had an ideal start, jumping on DePaul starting pitcher Julyana Gomez early,  scoring three runs in the first inning, courtesy of back-to-back home runs from
Allyson Ivey and
Nova Sinskul, with Ivey's dinger being a two-run shot.
Â
That momentum didn't last long however, as DePaul countered with a six spot in the bottom half of the inning to seize a 6-3 lead, with the go-ahead hit coming on a three-run homer by Brooke Johnson. A three-run second inning put the game out of reach and extended DePaul's lead to 9-3.Â
Â
Loyola cut the gap in the third inning on Sinskul's RBI single only to have the Blue Demons get that run back in the bottom half of the frame.
Caitlin Engelking's run-scoring groundout in the fourth cut into the deficit, but DePaul plated four more runs in their turn at bat in the inning to seal the outcome.
Â
A Look at the Numbers
- Sinskul had a great day at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a homer and a pair of RBI, while Ivey also knocked in two runs with her two-run, first-inning blast.
- Hannah Nalley singled and scored twice for the Ramblers, who totaled five hits as a team.
- DePaul's Kate Polucha enjoyed a big day, going 4-for-4 with three runs scored, and two driven in.
