EVANSVILLE, Ind. (March 9, 2021)
Â
In Short…
Sophomore
Alex Moskal and senior
Giann Magno each tallied goals, while the Rambler defensive unit turned in another sparkling performance as the Loyola University Chicago men's soccer team (2-1-2, 1-0-1 MVC) downed host Evansville (0-4-0, 0-2-0 MVC) by a final count of 2-0 this evening at Arad McCutchan Stadium in Evansville, Ind.
Head Coach Neil Jones' Thoughts…
"Tonight, the coaching staff was extremely proud of the effort and intensity our guys showed throughout a tough road conference game. We were dialed in right away, put in a good shift defensively, and took our chances well, albeit a little lucky with the second goal. Now we prepare for Bradley back at Loyola Soccer Park on Sunday."
Â
How It Happened
Loyola wasted no time going on the attack, generating a corner kick just 34 seconds in. Freshman
Julian Cisneros tallied the first attempt of the night for the Maroon & Gold in the 11
th minute, forcing a leaping stop out of Evansville goalkeeper Jacob Madden.
Â
Moskal would net the night's opening goal just 40 seconds after Cisneros' try. Senior
Liam Woehrle sent a long, arching pass into the 18-yard box that ultimately fell to Moskal, who slid his try past a sprawling Madden to put Loyola on top, 1-0. Junior goalkeeper
Simon Jillson racked up three saves over the next 12 minutes to preserve the lead, sending the Ramblers into halftime with a one-goal edge.
Â
Following a back-and-forth start to the second half, Loyola doubled its lead through a spectacular right-footed effort from Magno in the 56
th minute. Sophomore
Marc Torrellas sent a corner kick towards the center of the box, which was cleared only as far as Magno. The senior did the rest, depositing his volley from 30 yards out over Madden and under the crossbar to make it 2-0.
Â
With regulation entering its final quarter of an hour, Nicholas Likulia looked to pull the hosts back within one, but struck the crossbar. Woehrle suffered the same fate in the 86
th minute, seeing his bid for a first career goal denied by the woodwork. Added insurance wouldn't be needed though, as Loyola closed out a 2-0 win to pick up a crucial three points on the road.

Looking At The Numbers
- Moskal and Magno each netted the first goals of their respective careers this evening.
