In Short
Loyola University Chicago (7-20, 3-8 MVC) scored all three of its runs on Bradley (13-12, 6-6 MVC) errors in a 3-2 victory over the Braves this afternoon at Loyola Softball Park to take the three-game series.
Madison Ebeling scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning on Lucy Mead's errant throw to first base.Â
Â
How It Happened
After Loyola starter
Sydney Ruggles wiggled her way out of difficulty in both the first and second innings, stranding multiple runners on base in each frame, the Ramblers drew first blood, scoring a run in the third inning on Morgan Radford's throwing error.
Â
The game stayed that way until the top of the fifth inning when second baseman Vicki Zaluske clobbered a two-run home run to left center to put Bradley on top, 2-1.Â
Â
Loyola mounted a rally in the bottom of the seventh. Back-to-back one-out singles by
Abbey Jacobsen and
Sophie Van Acker gave the Rambles life, and one out later,
Nova Sinskul was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two down.
Allyson Ivey's ground ball to short looked like it would result in Loyola's rally falling short, but Mead's error allowed Jacobsen to score to even the contest at 2-2 and force extra innings.
Â
After suffering seven walk-off losses this season, finally found itself on the positive end one of those decisions when Ebeling and Sinskul reached on consecutive two-out singles to bring Ivey back to the plate with the winning run in scoring position in the bottom of the ninth inning. Once again, Ivey rolled a grounder to shortstop and Mead's throw was off target, sending Ebeling scurrying home and just under the tag of catcher Jordy van der Werf, for a 3-2 Loyola victory.
Â
A Look at the Numbers
- The top of Loyola's batting order got the job done, with the top three hitters (Ebeling, Sinskul and Ivey) combining for five hits, while Van Acker also had a two-hit afternoon.
- Madison Veres was sensational in relief, tossing 4.0 innings of scoreless ball with three strikeouts.
- Zaluski and Camryn Monteer tallied two hits apiece for Bradley.Â
