CHICAGO (April 2, 2021)
In Short
Southern Illinois (24-6, 6-3 MVC) scored 10 runs in the sixth inning to break open a scoreless tie and roll to a 10-0 victory over Loyola University Chicago (5-17, 1-5 MVC) in game one of a doubleheader at Loyola Softball Park Friday afternoon.
How It Happened
Loyola couldn't capitalize on a golden scoring opportunity in the third inning, putting a pair of runners on base thanks to back-to-back, one-out singles by
Nova Sinskul and
Jocelyn Currie . However, SIU starter Sarah Harness worked out of trouble by striking out the next two hitters to kill the rally.
The game stayed scoreless until Southern Illinois erupted for 10 runs in the top of the sixth inning to put the game away. A pair of bases-clearing doubles off the bats of Maddy Vermejan and Katelyn Massa accounted for six of the Salukis' runs in that big inning.
A Look at the Numbers
- Sinskul, Currie and Allyson Ivey each tallied a hit for the Ramblers, who dropped their sixth straight outing.
- Sydney Ruggles was saddled with the loss, but the right-hander struck out six in 5.1 innings pitched.
- Sidney Sikes was the lone SIU player to enjoy a multi-hit game, finishing at 2-for-3 on the day.
