In Short
Shortstop
Madison Ebeling had three hits and scored three times to lead Loyola University Chicago (10-22, 6-10 MVC) to a 5-4 victory over Missouri State (19-15, 10-5 MVC) tonight at Killian Stadium. Standing water in the outfield forced the teams to play just one game today in what was supposed to be a doubleheader that wound up being delayed for six hours.
Â
How It Happened
Loyola struck first when
Madison Ebeling, who led off the game with a base hit, scored on a Bears error with two outs to give the Ramblers an early edge.
Â
Ebeling was a catalyst in Loyola's two-run third inning that extended its advantage to 3-0. The junior got things going with a lead-off single, moved to second base on a passed ball, and one out later scored on
Allyson Ivey's single through the left side. Singles from
Amelia Thomas and
Sydney Barnett followed to load the bases with Ramblers and
Teagan Sopczak's walk forced in pinch runner
Sophia Remsik to bump the lead to 3-0.
Â
The Ramblers tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning, when Ebeling stroked another single with one out to start the offense.
Nova Sinskul followed with a single of her own and Ivey reached on an error before Thomas's sacrifice fly plated Ebeling. Barnett followed with an infield hit and Sinskul would come around on a Bears error to run the lead to 5-0 and chase MSU starter Steffany Dickerson.
Â
Missouri State used the long ball to get back into the game, using a solo home run by Olivia Krehbiel and a two-run shot off the bat of Tess Weakly in the bottom half of the fourth inning to slice the Ramblers' lead to 5-3.
Â
The Bears cut that gap in half in the bottom of the sixth when pinch hitter Meagan McCorkell smacked a one-out, run-scoring single to center, but Skyler Shaw was thrown out trying to go first to third to prevent a bigger inning for Missouri State.
Â
Madison Veres shut down Missouri State in order in the seventh to earn the win in relief and give the Ramblers their second straight victory and third in the last four outings.
Â
A Look at the Numbers
- Loyola has won two straight games and three of its last four.
- Ebeling continues to hit at a torrid pace and went 3-for-4 with three runs, while extending her hitting streak to eight games.
- Ivey moved another step closer to tying Lauren Moore's career RBI mark (124) by driving in her 121stcareer run and the senior first baseman also ran her hitting streak to eight contests.
- Barnett went 2-for-4 and Veres fanned two in 3.2 innings of relief to pick up with win.
