Loyola Falls To Drake In MVC Championship Second Round

Ivey homers for second straight day, but Ramblers’ season comes to a close

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (May 13, 2021)

In Short
Fifth-seeded Drake (19-29) used a six-run second inning to pull away for a 7-1 victory over No. 9 seed Loyola University Chicago (13-29) Thursday morning at Cooper Stadium in the second round of the Missouri Valley Conference Softball Championship. The loss ends the Ramblers' quest for the program's first NCAA Tournament berth.

How It Happened
Loyola found itself having to play catch-up after the Bulldogs manufactured a run thanks to the potency of the top of their batting order. Libby Ryan led off the Drake half of the first inning with a double and Macy Johnson followed with a single and promptly stole second base to put two runners in scoring position. One out later, Skylar Rigby perfectly executed a suicide squeeze to score Ryan and give Drake an early 1-0 advantage.

Drake broke the game open in the bottom of the second inning, plating six runs on only four hits, with the big blow coming in the form of a two-run single off the bat of Kristen Arias.

A pitching change at the start of the fourth inning saw Mackenzie Hupke move into the circle for Drake and first baseman Allyson Ivey promptly greeted her with a home run over the fence in right center to get the Ramblers on the board. That blast was Ivey's second in as many days at the tournament and in three career MVC Championship appearances, she circled the bases in each contest.

A Look at the Numbers
  • If Ivey does not return for her bonus year, she finishes her career ranked first in Loyola history with 128 RBI, second with a career .375 batting average, and fourth with 22 home runs.
  • Ruggles' 169 strikeouts this spring were the most by a Rambler pitcher since 2014 and the most by a Loyola right-handed hurler since 2004.
  • Loyola managed only two hits today off a pair of Bulldog pitchers – Ivey's homer and a single from Sydney Barnett.
  • Madison Veres allowed only one earned run in 4.2 innings of relief.

Up Next
Loyola finishes the season with a 13-29 overall record and will return Second Team All-MVC honorees Madison Ebeling and Sydney Ruggles, among others, in 2022.
