Loyola Comes Up Short At Saint Louis, 2-1

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (October 1, 2022)

In Short
A game-deciding own goal handed Saint Louis a 2-1 victory Saturday, with Loyola University Chicago's halftime lead slipping away. Senior midfielder Oscar Dueso scored for Loyola, as the Ramblers were limited to a season-low six shots in the first meeting between these two teams as Atlantic 10 rivals.

How It Happened
Loyola (5-2-2, 1-2-0) came out with pace and put a couple of good runs together in the opening few minutes. A long pass into the attacking zone was flagged for offsides, and then senior midfielder Marc Torrellas attempted to steer sophomore forward John Gates to open space by slotting a ball through the left side, but a SLU defender cleared the threat.

Then, the host Billikens countered with a couple of decent chances as a header went wide in the seventh minute, and then graduate student goalkeeper Simon Jillson made his first of many big plays in the 13th minute.

Right after Jillson made the first save, Dueso found the back of the net on the other end of the field in the 14th minute.

Dueso benefitted from an aggressive play from Gates and Torrellas, which resulted in a free ball in the box, and with his back to the net, Dueso spun and launched a shot off his left foot to the top left corner of the frame.

Loyola pressured late in the opening stanza, putting together some of its best opportunities of the night, which culminated in a near-goal from Jason Ybarra in the 43rd minute. Ybarra sent a high shot to the top center of the net, but the attempt was saved above the cross bar. The Ramblers would end up taking their 1-0 lead into halftime.

Momentum shifted in the Billikens' favor during the second half, as SLU found the equalizer when freshman CJ Coppola made a sliding run to the net and tapped in a perfect slot from Seth Anderson.

After a few tense moments on the back end, the Ramblers built up an attack and appeared to have the go-ahead goal in the 54th minute. Gates made a beautiful entry into the box, and with the keeper out of position, he fed Dueso who put a strike on target, but the ball just barely grazed the heel of a defender at the end line and prevented the goal.

SLU eventually took the lead in the 61st minute on the own goal and held on the rest of the way. The Billikens extended their conference home unbeaten streak to 12 consecutive games.
