MILWAUKEE, Wis. (November 10, 2022)
Â
In Short…
Maya Chandler posted her first career double-double, but it wasn't enough for Loyola University Chicago (1-1) in Thursday's 76-66 defeat at Milwaukee during non-conference action inside the Klotsche Center. Chandler finished with 13 points and career-high 11 rebounds, while
Anna Brown poured in a career-high 17 points to lead all scorers and
Sitori Tanin added 14 to reach double figures.
Â
How It Happened
Loyola picked up where it left off in Monday's season opener with another fast start, this time jumping out to a 7-2 lead on a made three from Tanin and a floating jumper by Chandler.
Â
The lead remained five after
Jala Johnson checked in and promptly buried a three, giving the Ramblers an 11-6 edge at the first media timeout. Loyola started the game by hitting 4 of 7 shot attempts from the floor, but eventually cooled off. Milwaukee took advantage and climbed back to take its first lead of the night with a minute left in the quarter, closing the frame on a 9-0 run as Loyola went scoreless for three minutes.
Â
A fastbreak jumper from Chandler to open the second quarter made it a two-point game, but that was as close as the Ramblers would get the rest of the night. The Ramblers trimmed the deficit to two on two more occasions in the second stanza, with back-to-back layups from
Sam Galanopoulos and Brown cutting the Panthers' lead to 25-23 with 3:23 before halftime. Brown drained a three with 55 seconds to keep the deficit at four, but Milwaukee responded with a three-point play to take a seven-point lead at the half, 33-27.
Â
Milwaukee came out running in the third quarter, utilizing a 9-0 spurt to extend its lead to 42-26. An old-fashioned three-point play from Chandler stopped the bleeding at the 6:19 mark, and a pair of buckets from
Sophia Nolan made it 49-37 with four minutes, but the Ramblers were just unable to sustain momentum and get back within single digits. Another Brown 3-pointer made it a 10-point game with under a minute to go in the third, 54-44, but the Panthers answered quickly with a jumper to take a 56-44 lead into the final period.
Â
The deficit hovered around 15 for the majority of the fourth quarter, until Brown went on a late tear and scored the final seven points of the contest in a span of 68 seconds. Brown and Tanin combined for 15 of Loyola's 22 points in the final stanza.
