Loyola Hosts Virginia In Home Opener Wednesday

The Ramblers and Cavaliers will meet for the first time

CHICAGO (November 15, 2022) — In Loyola's (1-1, 0-0 A-10) first of two home non-conference matchups against an ACC opponent, Virginia (3-0, 1-0 ACC) visits Gentile Arena on Wednesday. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. CT as the Ramblers seek their fifth straight victory in a home opener. The game will air live on ESPN+.

Loyola's last matchup with a Power 5 opponent occurred when the Ramblers traveled to Purdue on Dec. 9, 2018. Tomorrow's meeting with the Cavaliers will mark the first Power 5 program to visit Gentile in seven years, when Miami (FL) made the trip. The Hurricanes make their return to Gentile next Tuesday, Nov. 22.

Coming off a pair of road games to open the season, Loyola defeated Western Michigan 60-51 on Monday, Nov. 7, before suffering a 76-66 setback at Milwaukee last Thursday.

Three Ramblers are averaging double digits in the scoring column, led by Anna Brown with 14.0 points per game. The senior guard recorded a career-high 17 points on 5-of-11 shooting the last time out against Milwaukee. Brown drained three 3-pointers in both outings and didn't miss from beyond the arc in the season opener.

Senior guard Maya Chandler is averaging 13.5 points while junior forward Sitori Tanin has tallied 11.0 points per contest. Chandler, who registered her first double-double with 13 points and career-high 11 rebounds at Milwaukee, is tied with Brown for a team-high 5.5 rebounds per contest.

Brown and Chandler are perfect from the free throw line, shooting a combined 13 for 13. Overall, the Ramblers are shooting 88% (22-25) as a team from the line. Senior guard Sam Galanopoulos leads the squad with nine assists.

Series Stuff
Wednesday's game will mark the first meeting between the two programs, which both feature new head coaches. UVA head coach Amaka Agugua-Hamilton led Missouri State the past three seasons, with Loyola defeating the Bears (60-42) in last year's regular season finale at Gentile.

Scouting Virginia
The Cavaliers are off to a 3-0 start after defeating Wake Forest in their league opener on Sunday, 72-52. UVA will play its first road game of the season when it travels to Chicago. Leading returning scorer Camryn Taylor leads four players averaging double digits with 16.7 points and team-high 7.7 rebounds per game. The Cavs returned seven players and four starters from last year's squad, while adding transfers Sam Brunelle (Notre Dame) and Alexia Smith (Minnesota). UVA was picked to finish 11th out of 15 teams in the ACC preseason poll.

Up Next
Loyola travels to Eastern Illinois on Sunday (2 p.m.), before returning to Gentile with a quick turnaround against Miami (FL) in a 6 p.m. tipoff next Tuesday.
