Â
In Short
Loyola University Chicago (3-8) dropped a non-conference game against Marquette (8-2) Saturday at the Al McGuire Center by a final score of 77-53.
Maya Chandler led the Ramblers with 20 points while
Sam Galanopoulos added 14 and
Emma Nolan posted a season-best 11 points.
Â
How It Happened
After trailing by three, 31-28, at halftime thanks to 16 first-half points from Chandler, Loyola found itself in a hole after Marquette opened the third quarter with a 10-0 run.
Sophia Nolan's made 3-pointer at the media timeout stopped the bleeding and trimmed the deficit to 43-33 with under five minutes remaining.
Â
However, Loyola couldn't overcome eight turnovers in the period, which was more than the first two quarters combined, as the Golden Eagles led by 16 entering the final quarter. Marquette outscored Loyola 24-11 in the third with 20 points in the paint.
Â
A pull-up jumper from Chandler cut the deficit to 14 early in the fourth, 57-43, but that ended up the closest Loyola would get the rest of the way.
Â
Loyola never led in the contest after going down 13-4 in the first quarter. The Ramblers battled back to pull within three at the end of the opening stanza by finishing with a perfect 6-for-6 shooting. At one point, Chandler accounted for 11 of the team's 14 points during a span of seven minutes across the first two quarters. Back-to-back three's from
Kira Chivers and Chandler quickly cut down a nine-point deficit to three right before halftime.
