PEORIA, Ill. (March 19, 2022) – The Loyola University Chicago softball team wrapped up their non-conference tournament schedule last week and headed into their first Missouri Valley Conference game of the year against the Bradley Braves. After seven innings of play, the Ramblers came out on top, defeating the Braves 2-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED
It was a quick start to the first conference game of the season as only one hit was registered for each team in the first three innings. Even with those hits, both the Braves and the Ramblers stayed off the board as the score was 0-0 at the end of the third.
But after those three innings, the Ramblers got hot. They scored two runs in this fourth inning scored by
Amelia Thomas and
Tori Boysen, giving Loyola the lead. With those runs, it pushed the Ramblers ahead of the Braves as they headed into the final three innings.
Those runs were all the Maroon and Gold needed in order to come out with the win as they ended the game 2-0, grabbing their first win the Valley.
LOOKING AT THE NUMBERS
- Peyton Pepkowski was on the mound for the Ramblers and earned her third shutout of the season. She ended the game with nine strikeouts out of the 26 batters faced.
- With the runs scored in today's game, two players ended up with RBI's. Boysen not only registered a run, but helped Thomas get home, while Ava Bieneman's single to left field got Boysen around the bases.
- Offensively, the Ramblers had some strong performers. Three players for the Maroon and Gold registered doubles, and they were Thomas, Haley Wallace and Teagan Sopczak.
- In the field, catcher Abbey Jacobsen ended the day with the most putouts, contributing nine. Madison Ebeling, Nova Sinskul and Thomas all assisted on one play each.
