TUCSON, Ariz. (March 6, 2022) – The Loyola University Chicago softball wrapped up the final day of the Wildcat Invitational hosted by the Arizona Wildcats. They started the day against the Cyclones of Iowa State, who received votes in the most recent NFCA Division I Coaches Poll, and Arizona, who is ranked ninth in the NCAA.
Following the two games today, the Ramblers ended with an 0-2 record, losing 6-1 to Iowa State and 11-0 to Arizona.
GAME 1: RAMBLERS VS CYCLONES
The start of the game went in favor of the Cyclones as they finished the first inning with a run, but it didn't prevent the Ramblers from fighting in this game. Loyola scored its only run by
Haley Wallace after a wild pitch by Iowa State. Although they got this run, it wasn't enough to come back in this game as they lost 6-1.
Wallace obviously had the best offensive performance of the day, not just because of her run. She registered the most hits with two while
Ava Bieneman and
Nova Sinskul also secured hits of their own. With her performance, Wallace hit .306 in this game.
On the mound,
Andie Broniewicz started the game strong before
Sydney Ruggles came in as a relief pitcher.
They also had a strong defensive game with only one error.
Amelia Thomas had the most putouts for the Ramblers with five while Wallace assisted on four plays.
GAME 2: RAMBLERS VS WILDCATS
Shortly after their game against the Cyclones, the Ramblers were on the field again against a very strong Arizona team. Loyola fought to make it a low scoring game, but in the third inning, the Wildcats got hot and could not be stopped. This ultimately resulted in an 11-0 loss for Loyola in five innings.
Bieneman was the only Rambler to earn a hit in this game as she got on base in the first inning. However, she was caught stealing at second base.
Peyton Pepkowski started the game and registered three strikeouts during her two innings on the mound.
Bri Clifton and
Sydney Ruggles also came in to help the pitching staff with their efforts.
On defense,
Abbey Jacobsen contributed the most putouts with four while
Madison Ebeling and Sinskul each had two assists.
