PADUCAH, Ky. (April 26, 2022) – Graduate student
Devin Johnson wrapped up a decorated career by becoming the first Rambler in program history to be named a two-time All-MVC selection as the Loyola University Chicago men's golf team closed its 2021-22 season today at the Missouri Valley Conference Championship in Paducah, Ky.
Â
The Ramblers shot a final-round 314 to finish seventh in the team race with a 54-hole total of 930 (310-306-314). Southern Illinois (295-285-294=874) cruised to the team crown en route to securing The Valley's automatic bid to NCAA Regionals, while Valparaiso's Anthony Delisanti shot a blistering six-under-par on the back nine to secure the MVC individual title with a three-under-par 213 (74-72-67).
Â
"Congratulations to Southern Illinois on a great event," Loyola head men's golf coach
Erik Hoops said. "That is what you call taking care of business. They played such impressive golf this week."
Â
"We're obviously a little disappointed, but that doesn't at all define this season for us," Hoops continued. "I cannot state enough how much Devin, Ryan (Magee), and
Nick Welden have meant to me and this program over the last five years. People always talk about leaving a program better than you found it. Well, they found a team that was finishing in last place in the MVC and took it to levels we have never seen before. I cannot thank them enough for all they have given us."
Â
Johnson brought the curtain down on a wildly successful run with the Maroon & Gold by putting up an 82 today at the Country Club of Paducah (par 72; 7,014 yards) to finish tied for 33
rd place with a 237 (79-76-82). The Geneva, Ill. native closes his career with a program-best 73.6 stroke average across 95 rounds of play to best former Rambler great Armando Favela's previous mark by a stroke.
Â
"Devin receiving his second All-MVC award is so deserving given what he's done for this program," Hoops continued. "He's graduating have rewrote the record books here, and will forever go down in history as one of the best Loyola golfers of all time."
Â
Junior
Timmy Crawford finished as the top Rambler on the final leaderboard, accumulating a team-high four birdies as he carded a five-over-par 77 to finish in 17
th place at 228 (76-75-77). Graduate student
Ryan Magee, who, like Johnson, finished out his collegiate career today, handed in a 79 to earn a share of 21
st with a 232 (75-78-79).
Junior
Zach Walsh finished tied alongside Johnson in 33
rd at 237 (80-77-80) following a final-round 80, while redshirt senior
Tyler Anderson turned in a 78 to move up to 41
st with a 247 (88-81-78).
Â
"We cannot thank the MVC enough for all they have done for our program the last 10 years," Hoops concluded. "It was a blast being a part of this conference and having a lot of natural rivalries. We're looking forward to our next step in the Atlantic 10, but we wouldn't be ready for that challenge without our years in the MVC."
Â
Hoops is slated to welcome back four letterwinners for the 2022-23 season. That group will be joined by a quartet of incoming freshmen when Loyola begins play in the Atlantic 10 Conference this fall.
