PITTSBURGH, Pa. (September 17, 2022)
In Short
Playing its first conference match as a member of the Atlantic 10, the Loyola University Chicago men's soccer team (4-1-2, 0-1-0 A-10) suffered its first loss of the season in a 2-1 setback to Duquesne (6-0-1, 1-0-0 A-10) Saturday at DU's Rooney Field.
Head Coach Steve Bode's Thoughts…
"After conceding the early goal, I was happy with our team's response to bounce back quickly and get the goal back. We created some very good chances after scoring the goal that had we converted would have put us up. Instead, they finished a chance from distance to take the lead. After that, we're chasing the game and unfortunately couldn't find the equalizer. Duquesne is a very challenging team to play against, especially at home. We'll learn from this experience and be better for it."
How It Happened
The teams didn't waste any time getting on the board with both first-half goals scored in the first 10 minutes of the match.
Duquesne took a 1-0 lead off a header by Christoffer Vie Angell in the third minute. It was the first goal surrendered in the first half this season by the Ramblers.
After Loyola took a corner kick in the opening moments, the Dukes got back-to-back corner tries on the next possession and capitalized on the latter attempt, as Vie Angell knocked one in off the pass from Nate Dragisich. At first, it appeared
Julian Cisneros cleared the shot out of harm's way, making a brilliant stop with his left foot while covering the net, but it was determined the ball crossed the line.
Loyola never flinched and quickly responded with
Andrew Schweinert's equalizer in the ninth minute.
Working the attacking third, the Ramblers flipped sidelines with good passing and found Cisneros alone on the right side. He had time and space and took advantage, delivering with a perfect cross into the middle of the box where Schweinert made a perfect touch before the ball hit the turf.
From there, Loyola continued to build up pressure in the attacking zone and quickly put several more chances on net. The Ramblers would end up outshooting Duquesne 11-5 in the first half.
Marc Torrellas took a great swing with his left foot near the 15-minute mark, as he one-timed a nice pass from
John Gates, but DU's keeper Domenic Niscemben made a diving save to his left.
Despite the heat applied by the Ramblers, the host Dukes were able to find the game-winning goal in the 57th minute when Tom Tzabari drilled a long-range shot from 30 yards to the right upper 90.
Loyola had more decent opportunities near the 70-minute mark with a pair of corner kicks and three shots, but came up empty.
Inside The Numbers
• Schweinert's goal was the first goal scored by the Ramblers in a road match this season
• The goal was Schweinert's first of the season and second of his collegiate career
• Cisneros notched his second assist of the year, a new single-season career high
•
Simon Jillson finished with two saves, both coming in the second half
• DU's Niscemben logged eight saves
• Loyola held a 9-8 edge in corner kicks, including five in the second half
• It was only the second meeting between these two teams (DU leads series 1-0-1)
