Loyola Lifts Curtain on 2022-23 Season at Redbird Invitational

Ramblers fresh off record setting campaign in 2021-22

CHICAGO (September 9, 2022) – The Loyola University Chicago women's golf team will turn its attention to the 2022-23 season, as they prepare to open the year at the Redbird Invitational in Normal, Ill.

Play at Weibring Golf Course (par 72, 6,010 yards) is set to begin on Sunday with an 8 a.m. shotgun start and 36 holes of continuous play on day one. Final round action will start with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start on Monday. Live scoring will be available on both days via Golfstat.com.

The season-opener sees the Ramblers reunited with a handful of former Missouri Valley Conference rivals, with host Illinois State joining Bradley, Drake, Northern Iowa, Valparaiso, and Evansville in the field. Also joining Loyola are Northern Illinois, Eastern Kentucky, IUPUI, Ball State, Butler, Bowling Green, and Southern Indiana.

Head coach Brandy Johnston is set to begin her first season at the helm in Rogers Park with a lineup featuring graduate student Lorenza Martinez, junior Abby Thielbar, and sophomore Grace Suter, with graduate student Serena Shah and freshman Adie Maki making their Rambler debuts this weekend. Sophomore Jolie Brochu will also be joining the team as an individual.

Martinez is coming off of her strongest season yet with the Maroon & Gold, finishing in a tie for 4th at the MVC Championship en route to being named to the All-Tournament Team. Thielbar will be looking to build on an already historic career after setting both the 18- and 54-hole program records in the previous season in addition to earning All-MVC Honors.

Suter begins her fall campaign after a solid freshman season, carding her best round of the year at the FAU Paradise Invitational with a two under-par 70. Brochu, meanwhile, made her debut for the Ramblers last season as well, playing in 25 rounds, including her T-21st finish at the Bradley Coyote Creek Classic in October for her best result of the year.

Shah comes to Loyola after wrapping up a successful stretch at SMU with an impressive 76.5 scoring average across four years, highlighted by a share of 3rd place at the 2020 Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate along with being named to the All-AAC Team in 2022. Maki arrives in Rogers Park fresh off of a record-breaking career at Skyline High School, placing first in program history for lowest individual round (68) and career scoring average (73.3) while also competing in the 2022 U.S. Women's Amateur Championship in August.

Loyola will return to action September 19-20, taking part in the Cardinal Classic in Muncie, Ind.
