How It Happened
Saint Joseph's came out shooting to the tune of an 11-0 lead over the first 2:35 of the game, forcing the Ramblers to burn an early timeout. A pair of free throws from Alston put Loyola on the board but the lead would grow to 16-2 before
Tom Welch knocked down Loyola's first field goal of the game just over five minutes into the game.
Three consecutive baskets by Alston,
Jayden Dawson and
Bryce Golden pulled the Ramblers within eight with 11:46 remaining in the opening half. The three quick buckets would kick-start a 12-2 Loyola run to pull the Ramblers within four at 20-16 with just over nine minutes to go in the opening half.
Saint Joseph's weathered the Loyola run, pushing the advantage up to 16 at the under-4 timeout thanks in part to an 11-0 Hawks run which included three consecutive 3-pointers.
The last two points in the half would come from Alston at the free throw line in the closing seconds. The pair from the charity stripe gave Alston seven in the first half, giving him exactly 1,000 career points.
Seven straight points by the Ramblers, including triples by Dawson and
Ben Schwieger, cut the deficit down to 14 with 14:23 remaining and forcing the Hawks to burn a timeout. An ensuing Saint Joseph's run would prevent the Ramblers' attempt at a late rally.
