Kingston, R.I. (January 15, 2023)
In Short…
In its first trip to the Ryan Center, shooting woes plagued Loyola (6-12, 1-4 A-10) in Sunday's 63-34 setback against conference-leading Rhode Island (14-3, 5-0 A-10). Freshman
Mallory Ramage registered a season-high seven points to lead the Ramblers, who finished shooting just 20% (11-56) overall from the floor.
How it Happened
Emma Nolan opened the scoring for Loyola as her jumper made it 5-2 Rhode Island, before the host Rams grabbed a 10-2 advantage at the first media timeout. URI's Madison Hattix-Covington knocked down a pair of 3-pointers to spark the long-distance shooting success for the Rams, who made half of their made field-goal attempts from beyond the arc in the first half.
The Ramblers pulled back within a point when
Jala Johnson provided a quick lift off the bench with five points, which was followed by
Sophia Nolan's layup to cut the deficit to 10-9 near the three-minute mark in the first quarter.
However, Rhode Island would close the opening quarter on a run that extended its lead to double digits in the second period.
Anna Brown's jumper trimmed the deficit back down to 22-13 at the 6:26 mark, but the Ramblers went cold from the field and were held scoreless the rest of the period, trailing 35-13 at the intermission.
Loyola tried to get going with a pair of free throws by
Maya Chandler to open the third quarter. The Ramblers were only outscored 15-14 in the third but couldn't find momentum after going scoreless for over seven minutes to start the final quarter.
Mayé Touré led the Rams with 12 points and 15 rebounds for her sixth straight double-double effort.
