Late Surge Not Enough in Loyola's 75-61 Setback to George Washington

Emma Nolan scored a season-high 15 points to lead the Ramblers in scoring

CHICAGO (January 25, 2023)

In Short…
Playing in front of more than 3,000 fans on "Field Trip Day with the Ramblers", Loyola's (6-14, 1-6 A-10) comeback bid fell short in a 75-61 setback to George Washington (13-8, 5-3 A-10) Wednesday afternoon at Gentile Arena. Emma Nolan scored a season-high 15 points while Kira Chivers recorded a career-best 12 points to lead the Ramblers.

How it Happened
Loyola responded nicely to an early 9-0 run for the visitors, with Chivers and Jala Johnson draining back-to-back 3-pointers to get things going offensively. Johnson, who scored all eight of her season-high points total in the opening frame, hit another trey, and added a layup to pull the Ramblers within one in the final minute, but GW's Nya Lok hit a three at the first quarter buzzer for an 18-14 GW lead.

GW kept the momentum and caught fire in the second quarter, outscoring the Ramblers 29-15 in the period while shooting 9 of 13 (69%) overall and 4 for 4 from three-point range. A layup by Mallory Ramage cut the deficit to 21-16 with 8:41 until halftime, but the visitors eventually grabbed their largest lead of the day, 44-21, late in the stanza. A pair of 3-pointers from Chivers and Whitney Dunn ended the Loyola drought and stopped the bleeding momentarily, but GW finished the opening half shooting 8 for 13 (70%) from deep to claim an 18-point lead (47-29) at the break.

In the second half, Loyola outscored GW 32-28 across the final two quarters, including 19-17 in the third frame and 13-11 in the final period, but the halftime deficit was too much to overcome.

Loyola rattled off an 8-0 run to open the fourth quarter, slicing the double-digit deficit down to just eight points when Emma Nolan's breakaway layup made it 64-56 with under five minutes remaining. GW missed its first 11 shot attempts in the final stanza but responded right away to Nolan's layup with another three ball to keep a double-digit lead the rest of the way.

Mia Lakstigala led GW with 19 points on 4-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc, while Mayowa Taiwo registered a double-double effort with 12 points and 19 rebounds.
