In Short…
The Loyola University Chicago women's basketball team fell 68-49 to Richmond Wednesday night at Gentile Arena, snapping a three-game streak and dropping the Ramblers to 6-9 (1-1 A-10) overall on the season. The visiting Spiders picked up their first league win and improved to 11-4 (1-1 A-10).
Anna Brown led Loyola with 12 points and six rebounds, along with 11 points and six boards from
Sam Galanopoulos.
How it Happened
Playing its first home game in a month, Loyola never led in the conference home opener as it couldn't' shake off a slow start. Richmond jumped out to a 21-9 lead with an 11-0 run in the second quarter, which came in response to the Ramblers pulling within a point near the end of the opening period.
Richmond rode momentum into halftime after drilling 6 of 12 threes to build a 20-point advantage, 35-15, at the break. The Spiders outscored the Ramblers 20-6 in the second stanza. After a floating jumper by Galanopoulos made it a 10-point deficit midway through the second, the Spiders went on a 14-4 tear over the final five-plus minutes.
Loyola would end up outscoring Richmond 11-9 and forced nine turnovers in the third quarter, but the Maroon & Gold couldn't get the offense going and went scoreless over the final 4:40 of the period.
A pair of made 3-pointers from Galanopoulos and
Mallory Ramage early in the fourth quarter trimmed the deficit to 14 with the score 46-32, but that was as close as the Ramblers could get the rest of the way.
Richmond's Katie Hill led five Spiders in double digits with 15 points and 12 rebounds.
