Loyola Chicago Knocks off No. 25 Saint Louis at Home

Ramblers earn first win over Billikens since 1996

CHICAGO (Oct. 14, 2023) – The Loyola University Chicago men's soccer team downed No. 25 Saint Louis, 3-1, Saturday at Hoyne Field. The ranked win was Loyola Chicago's first of the season while the Ramblers now hold the No. 3 spot in the Atlantic 10.

"I told the players that we needed to have a certain kind of mentality today to outwork Saint Louis - that was our whole thing," said head Loyola soccer coach Steve Bode. "It's a very difficult task because they're a very good team and a very strong team with their mentality, but I felt like we came in the first minutes of the game all over them,"

How it Happened
The Ramblers (7-2-3, 3-1-2 A10) did in fact come flying out of the gates, sending off three shots in the first five minutes of play. On the attack, it didn't take long for the Maroon and Gold to find the back of the net as Oscar Dueso scored in the 17th minute after Markus Maurer headed the ball down to Dueso's feet in the box. Dueso bounced the ball off the turf with one-touch and past the SLU keeper, giving the 'Blers their first lead of the day.
Later in the 29th minute, Petar Janjic notched the second game-winner of his career with his head, marking his fifth goal of the season. Janjic scored after teammate Julian Cisneros played him a beautiful cross from the opposite side of the box, increasing the Loyola lead to 2-0.
Coming out of the break, Saint Louis came within one goal as Christian Buendia scored in the 49th minute. However, the Ramblers' backline recovered quickly and allowed only five more shots through the remainder of the match.

In the waning moments of the contest, the Billikens pulled their keeper in an attempt to level the score. However, Ben Bishoff intercepted the ball near midfield and fed a fantastic pass up field where Cisneros scored the empty-netter in the last minute of play, putting a cherry on top of a successful outing for Loyola.
Notes

  • Loyola's last ranked win came in 2022 when the squad beat No. 25 Bowling Green at home.
  • The'Blers out-shot SLU, 10-0, in the first half.
  • The Billikens' eight-match win streak was dismantled by the Ramblers. Also coming to an end was SLU's 12-match unbeaten streak in A-10 regular-season and tournament games dating to 2022.
  • Janjic's game-winner was his second of the year and fifth goal overall.
  • Cisneros' three points was a season-high for the defensive mid.
  • Dueso's goal was his fifth of the year.
  • Maurer's five shots tied his season high. His assist was his first of the season.

Up Next
The Ramblers will take a week off before action resumes next Saturday (Oct. 21). Loyola will face Rhode Island on the road at 6 p.m. CT.

"We can beat anyone if we play like this, have the mentality like this, and have the belief we can beat anyone. I think that's something our team felt, but now we know. Now we know we really believe that when we're at our best, we can overcome a lot of obstacles. Two goals down, three goals down, or up two goals at half and find a way to get results. So that was huge."
