Second-Half Comeback Leads Brown Past Loyola Chicago

Ramblers fall, 56-49, to Bears Wednesday

CHICAGO – Despite three Ramblers scoring double-digits, the Loyola University Chicago women's basketball fell, 56-49, to Brown Wednesday afternoon at Gentile Arena. The Ramblers fall to 2-3 overall while Brown improved to 3-3.

"Really disappointed in our lack of execution tonight," said head Loyola Chicago coach Allison Guth. "I've never experienced a third quarter in the way that we are playing third quarter basketball. I thought we fixed a little bit of that in our game vs. Bradley, but an unbelievably inefficient scoring performance in the third - that digs a deep hole. Even at that, we put ourselves in position to win the game. Just an overall lack of execution in how we're running offense. We can't win ballgames scoring 29% from the three. We've got to be better in the third quarter,"

How it Happened
Loyola Chicago's defense held Brown to 13 percent (2-15) from the floor in the opening quarter. Meanwhile, the 'Blers drained six shots from the field, including two from deep, to take command early. The Ramblers opened scoring on a 7-2 run before building its lead to 14-5 as the first frame came to a close.

Thoranna Kika Hodge-Carr's layup started scoring in the second quarter before Sitori Tanin nailed back-to-back buckets, inflating Loyola's lead to 20-5. Mallory Ramage's made free throw and a layup from Emma Nolan at 4:23 built LUC's advantage to 23-7, but Brown began to find rhythm on the offensive side of the court after that.

The Bears took off on a 7-0 run and shrunk the Ramblers' lead to 23-14 with under two minute to go in the half. Alyssa Fisher, with two at the charity stripe and a layup, made the score 27-15 as the two teams headed to the lock room.

In the third, Brown outscored Loyola, 16-3, and took a 31-30 lead before mounting a 50-44 lead in the final frame. Tanin nailed a pair at the line with under a minute to go, making it a four-point game at 50-46, but the Bears held on to win it, 56-49.

Notes
  • Coming off her Atlantic 10 Player of the Week nod, Sam Galanopoulos had a team-high 13 points. She added four assists, two steals, and two boards.
  • Fisher scored 12 and nearly had a double-double with seven rebounds.
  • Tanin notched her second-straight double-double with 11 rebounds and 11 points. She also garnered four assists and a pair of blocks. She's reached double-digit points in all but one game thus far in 2023-24.
  • Hodge-Carr brought down a season-best seven rebounds.
  • Loyola's bench produced 13 points while Brown's had just three.
  • The 'Blers beat Brown on the glass, 41-28.
Up Next
Loyola returns to action this Sunday (Nov. 26) as it plays crosstown rival DePaul. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. CT inside Wintrust Arena.

"We've got really talented coaches; we've got talented players that can accomplish something special. Right now, we're in that infancy part of our culture building that we have to continually believe in ourselves. You only believe in yourselves when you get it done. And we didn't get it done tonight. So that puts us back in a position where we got to prove it to ourselves and get back to the lab,"
