No. 3 Loyola Chicago Eliminated From A-10 Tournament in PKs

The match was tied, 2-2, heading into penalties

CHICAGO (Nov. 4, 2023) – The No. 3 seeded Loyola University Chicago men's soccer team was eliminated from the 2023 Atlantic 10 Tournament at the hands of No. 6 Dayton Saturday inside Loyola Soccer Park. After the quarterfinal match was tied, 2-2, following 110 minutes of play, the Ramblers were eliminated, 5-4, on penalty kicks.

"I think this game could have been the final," said head Loyola coach Steve Bode. "When you talk about the top-eight teams making the conference tournament - one through eight - anyone, I believe, could win it. Dayton and us were as good of teams as there were in the top-eight. So, great game, back-and-forth. We made plays, they made plays, and obviously it comes down to PKs in the end, which is, as we soccer people say, 'flip the coin to see who wins the game',"

How it Happened
With the Maroon and Gold  (8-2-5, 4-1-3 A10) limiting the Flyers  (6-6-6, 3-1-4 A10) to just four first half shots, the Loyola's seventh shots found the back of the net as Marc Torrellas scored in the 30th minute, a strike to the left side of the goal, with his head thanks to Markus Maurer's corner kick.

Coming out of the halftime break and in the span of a chaotic seven minutes, three goals were scored between the two teams. Dayton evened the match at 1-1 with a goal in the 52nd minute, but Julian Cisneros helped Loyola regain the lead, 2-1, after a pass from Petar Janjic in the 54th. Five minutes later, Dayton retied the match, 2-2, with a goal in the 59th minute.

With the match even, the two squads battled through fulltime and two 10-minute overtimes before PKs were needed to determine a winner. In heartbreaking fashion, Loyola slipped, 5-4, in penalties.

Notes
  • The two teams were even on shots, 14-14, but Loyola led in shots on-goal, 9-6.
  • LUC led in corners, 10-1.
  • Aidan Crawford notched four saves.
  • Maurer led the team in shots with four.
"I'm just proud of this team. One of the things we talked about is, these guys are all in. We are such a tight knit team - that's what I think the best college teams are like - they're bought in, they're fighting for each other, they love being around each other. It's much more about relationships and the relationships built than it is about soccer, the sport. That's what we're all about. It's all about our program and that's why it hurts when you lose like this,"
