CHICAGO – The Loyola University Chicago women's basketball team forced 27 Milwaukee turnovers while only committing 14 themselves in its 60-47 win over the Panthers Saturday afternoon inside Gentile Arena. The win marked Loyola's third-straight as the squad improved to 5-4 overall.
Sitori Tanin scored 16 points, her fifth game in double-figures this season, while
Ali Berg added 13 and a game-high six rebounds.
"The best thing for us tonight was that we had been working through some third quarter deficiencies and we finally thought fought those third quarter deficiencies to finish a game, which we were really proud of as a team," said Loyola Chicago head coach
Allison Guth. "We talked like a team today - when you're not scoring the ball at a high-percentage from three or from the field, that can sometimes link into how you defend. The fact that we held these guys to eight points in the fourth quarter [was great to see],"
Sam Galanopoulos' 3-pointer and Tanin's layup started Loyola off on a quick 5-0 run. The Maroon and Gold held Milwaukee scoreless for the first three minutes and seven seconds of the game, helping them jump out to an early 7-2 lead at 6:29. Likewise, Loyola Chicago held MKE without a point for the final three minutes and 30 seconds of the first quarter and the first two minutes and 27 seconds of the second quarter.
After committing nine turnovers in the first quarter, the Panthers found their footing in the second frame, shooting the ball at a 54.5-percent clip from the field and an 80-percent clip from deep. Milwaukee took its first lead of the ballgame with 1:01 to play in the half after Kendall Nead's trey and owned a 24-22 lead as the teams headed to the locker room.
The Ramblers battled with MKE until a 17-1 Loyola run from 0:53 in the third quarter to 3:52 in the fourth quarter helped the Maroon and Gold take a 52-40 advantage. Loyola outscored Milwaukee, 22-8, in the fourth quarter. The Ramblers' 22 fourth-quarter points were the most they have scored in a fourth quarter this season as the squad won it, 60-47, as time expired.
