Ramblers Battle Spiders to the Wire in 74-71 setback

Five players scored in double figures, led by 17 from Ben Schwieger and 16 from Jalen Quinn

CHICAGO, Ill. (February 11, 2023)

In Short…
Five Ramblers scored in double figures Saturday afternoon, but Loyola's comeback attempt in the second half fell just short in a 74-71 setback at Richmond.

Trailing by 12 early in the second half, Loyola chipped away at the Spider lead, getting the deficit down to one on three occasions in the closing minutes. Loyola held Richmond without a field goal over the final 6:52 but, but the go-ahead bucket eluded the Ramblers.

Ben Schwieger scored a team-high 17 points to match his second-highest scoring output this season. Jalen Quinn scored a season-high 16 points while Philip Alston (12) Braden Norris (12) and Bryce Golden (10) all scored in double figures.

How It Happened
After spotting Richmond the first four points of the game, Loyola responded with the next seven to take the early lead. Ben Schwieger scored four points while Bryce Golden, making his return home to Richmond, knocked down a three from the top of the key.

The Spiders would slowly build a 10-point lead throughout the middle portion of the first half before five quick points by the Ramblers cut the deficit down to five with 5:25 to play. A nice pass by Golden found Schwieger wide open for the easy dunk before Braden Norris knocked a triple. A Richmond surge down the stretch built the Spiders' lead back to 10 but Schwieger's jumper with nine seconds left would pull Loyola within eight at 43-35 heading into the halftime break.

Nine straight points by Loyola early in the second half pulled the visitors within three of Richmond. Norris opened and closed the run with triples while Golden converted an old-fashioned 3-point play to push the score to 47-44 in favor of the Spiders with 17:18 remaining.

Jalen Quinn single-handedly pulled the Ramblers within striking distance of Richmond, scoring five consecutive points to make it a 62-59 game with just under eight minutes to play. The freshman first knocked down a pair at the line before connecting from beyond the arc to give him 10 points in the game, his second game this season in double figures.

The Loyola defense clamped down, not allowing a Richmond field goal over the final 6:52, giving the Ramblers the chance to get within a point of the Spiders on three separate occasions down the stretch
